The 3rd largest of the 16 administrative regions of Ghana is the hub of the rich cultural and historic heritage of the ancient Asante Kingdom. One of the most beautiful regions with unspoiled natural attractions, distinct cultural and historic backdrops of festivals.
The Independence Square is also known as the the "Black Star Square." It was first commissioned by Kwame Nkrumah in 1961 upon the first visit of Queen Elizabeth II to Ghana after independence. The Square boasts of 3 monuments - The Independence Arch, the Liberation Day Monument and the Black Star Monument. It serves as a site for all civic and military parades in Ghana.
The Cape Coast Castle serves as the largest monument built by early European traders in then Gold Coast, now Ghana. The castle commensurate the legacy of the trans-Atlantic slave trade and serves as a UNESCO World Heritage site. It currently serves as the center for the West African Historical Museum.
Kakum Conservation Area is a wildlife protected area located in the Central Region. The conservation area is home to a wide variety of plant and animal species and the world famous Kakum Canopy Walkway. It is one of only 3 locations in Africa with a Canopy Walkway which is 350 metres (1,150 ft) long and connects seven tree tops which provides access to the forest.
Also known as the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park and Mausoleum, it serves as the final resting place of Ghana's first President and Africanist, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah and his wife Fatimah Nkrumah. The museum hosts rare artifacts relating to Ghana's independence and serves as a center for in-depth history of the Sub-Saharan struggles for independence.
